Universal Health Services, Inc., one of the nation’s largest and most respected providers of hospital and healthcare services in America, is pleased to announce that Founder, Chairman and CEO Alan B. Miller has been named as the recipient of the esteemed Admiral Charles LeMoyne Distinguished Civilian Award for 2019. Miller was honored during the Ben Franklin Global Forum’s Annual Army Navy Gala on December 13.

Established in 1997, the Admiral Charles LeMoyne Awards are named in honor of the deputy commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, and started as a way to recognize high school students with standout leadership qualities. The award has since evolved to honor a Distinguished Soldier and Distinguished Sailor annually, and a Distinguished Civilian when warranted for significant contributions to the nation. Miller is one of five recipients to ever receive the Distinguished Civilian Award.

Over the past 15 years, Universal Health Services (UHS), led by Alan B. Miller, has expanded its collaborations with military leaders and behavioral health experts including the establishment of the UHS Patriot Support Program. This initiative was born out of a shared objective to complement the services provided by the Department of Defense, Defense Health Agency, TRICARE® and the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

In 2018, UHS Patriot Support Program was privileged to provide behavioral healthcare treatment and care for over 7,500 active duty military, veterans and their families. The Patriot Support Centers of Excellence (13 located across the U.S.) provide specialized care to service members in a completely dedicated treatment environment via units dedicated to military. In most instances, the treatment professionals and staff of these programs have either served in the military or have been committed to the culture and service in some other capacity. Patriot Support Service Centers (12 located across the U.S.) provide specialized care in programs that may also provide treatment to civilians in a common treatment environment. The UHS Patriot Support Program maintains close communications with leadership at installations, with the common goal of returning active service members to duty with honor and dignity.

“I am honored to receive this prestigious award from the Ben Franklin Global Forum,” said Alan B. Miller, Founder, Chairman and CEO, Universal Health Services. “It recognizes the work of our UHS team, but as we all would agree — there is much more work to be done to serve the behavioral health needs of our military. I would ask my industry peers and other healthcare organizations to join in our quest to address this important population by providing compassionate care with dignity and respect, as they so richly deserve.”

In presenting Alan B. Miller at the ceremony, U.S. Army Major General Xavier T. Brunson, Commanding General of the 7th Infantry Division, praised his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others, in particular the health and well-being of America’s men and women in uniform. Further, the 77th Sustainment Brigade, currently in Kuwait, sent a video message — subsequently posted to Facebook — congratulating Alan B. Miller, one of their alumni soldiers, recognizing him as “a special Liberty Warrior.”
