FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Aug. 23, 2010 - To raise awareness of mental health issues and solutions for the military, Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) (NASDAQ: PSYS) and its PSI Patriot Support initiative recently sponsored a booth at the 2010 TRICARE Communications and Customer Service conference in New Orleans.
The conference gave more than 500 Military Health System customer service and communications staff the opportunity to network and learn about changes to military healthcare benefits and focus on providing the best possible services to their customers.

“Anytime we have a platform to talk about our Patriot Support facilities and the services and treatment available, we take advantage,” said Andy Laning, executive director of military affairs for PSI. “The conference offered us a great networking experience and up-to-date information about what is happening in military healthcare.”

Keynote speaker Christine Humber, deputy director of TRICARE Management Activity, and motivational speaker Jake Poore presented at the Aug. 3 - 5 event. PSI Patriot Support served as the only behavioral health supporter at the conference.

Poplar Springs Hospital Offers Military Substance Abuse Program

PETERSBURG, Va. — (June 2, 2010) — To address the growing need for service members with drug and alcohol problems, Poplar Springs Hospital has created a dedicated military substance abuse program at the full-service behavioral health facility. David Brady, D.O, serves as clinical director of the substance abuse program as part of a larger active duty military treatment program at Poplar Springs.
Treatment begins with a thorough assessment. Based on the assessment findings, service members are placed in different parts of the TRICARE-certified programs at the facility. Poplar Springs utilizes the American Society of Addiction Medicine criteria, factoring in the severity of addiction, community supports, co-morbid mental and physical conditions, and potential for complicated withdrawal to guide their treatment recommendations.

Dr. Brady understands military life and knows the challenges military personnel and their families face. With a well-rounded medical, and psychiatric background, Brady oversees the Active Duty Military Unit. Poplar Springs has treated hundreds of soldiers for the emotional and psychological effects of military stress and post-deployment adjustment-related issues—including substance abuse.

“Poplar Springs understands the impact that military service has on our service members and their families,” said Brady. “After touring several of the military installations within the Eastern Seaboard Region and speaking with military officials about their needs, we built a military substance abuse program at Poplar Springs designed specifically for these groups. We have streamlined treatment programs to address their issues and treatment priorities. We will actively continue discussions to determine the best course of action to prevent future patterns of substance abuse and help mitigate the current issues.”

The active duty military unit at Poplar Springs Hospital regularly treats military personnel from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Maryland with individual military personnel coming from as far away as Michigan and Pennsylvania.

The Brook Hospitals Partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters for “Mentoring Military Children”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – (June 1, 2010) – Mentoring youth has been the focus of Big Brothers Big Sisters since its inception more than 100 years ago. The Brook Hospitals, Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facilities, recently announced they will join their mission to provide support to military families.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters program will respond to the needs of children in military families with its “Mentoring Military Children” initiative. The program matches children who have a parent deployed or in the process of deployment. It is open to the children of active duty Military, Reservist and National Guard Soldiers. Once the child is matched, Big Brothers Big Sisters provides mentor support with special events, outings and activities.

Since 2001, nearly 900,000 troops with children have been deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf. The Pentagon estimates that currently 234,000 children have a mother or father deployed.

“Children with mothers and fathers in the military often suffer from increased levels of fear and anxiety or may experience behavioral problems,” said Paul Andrews, chief executive officer of The Brook Hospital – Dupont and The Brook Hospital - KMI. “With high levels of military deployment and repeat tours of duty, partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters allows our staff to assist families and their children in the Fort Knox area who need help coping with the stress and complications that multiple deployments might cause.”

Most recently, The Brook Hospitals sponsored a breakfast to kick off the “Mentoring Military Children” initiative. The event was held at the Leaders Club at Fort Knox.

“The Big Brothers Big Sisters mission falls right in line with our mission: to provide military families with the help and support they need as they bravely serve our country,” said Andrews. “As they proudly serve us, we want to serve them.”

In addition to their support of the “Mentoring Military Children” initiative, The Brook Hospital – Dupont is also designated as a PSI Patriot Support Center, an expanded program that provides behavioral health services to military members and their families at PSI facilities around the country.

Army OneSource Announces Community Outreach Program for Civilian and Behavioral Health Providers

Army OneSource recently introduced a community outreach program to raise awareness of the unique challenges of Military life on Service members and their families, and to address the growing demand for behavioral health services.
Sponsored by the U.S. Army, Army OneSource has launched a formal campaign to encourage civilian health and behavioral health providers to complete a FREE online course in the series, “Treating the Invisible Wounds of War.” The series of courses help primary care physicians, case workers, mental health providers and other professionals develop a better understanding of the culture in which Service members and Veterans, as well as their families, live and work.

In today’s combat situation – where there is no front line and constant vigilance must be maintained on the ground, where individuals are serving as many as four deployments that are longer in duration than in the past, and where Service members and families are asked to give more because of the all-volunteer-military, it has become true that, “the wounds of war are not limited to the battlefield.” The courses provide best practices for identifying, assessing and treating behavioral health problems that result from the trauma of war.

To complete the course, please follow instructions below:

From your browser, go to http://www.aheconnect.com/citizensoldier
Step 1: Click on New Users tab at the top of the screen

Step 3: Login to the system using your new ID and password
Step 4: Click on Courses tab at the top of the screen
Step 5: Select a course you wish to complete.
Step 6: Click on Register

The seminar topics included “The New Veterans: Who Are They,” “General Considerations in Mental Health Treatment of Veterans” and “Understanding Homecoming for Veterans.” Throughout the series, Dr. Mundt explained how Veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been affected by their deployments.

“At Riveredge Hospital we are committed to providing trauma informed care for our patients,” said Carey Carlock, chief executive officer of Riveredge. “Utilizing this treatment approach and providing this type of educational series is only one way we ensure our mental health professionals have the latest information to properly treat this population.”

The series was geared toward therapists, psychologists, social workers and related professionals, as well as those interested in learning more about PTSD and other mental health issues related to serving in combat.

The seminars were just a few of the free, physician-led trainings Riveredge Hospital hosts on numerous behavioral health-related topics. “Patriot Support Centers like Cedar Springs seek to partner with the military to provide quality mental health care to service members,” said Dr. Dukes, who has been deployed to Iraq in the past. “For these Americans who have answered the call of duty, we proudly answer the call to care.”

Dr. Dukes, a Jackson, Miss., native, has more than 22 years of military experience with active deployments to the combat theater. He enlisted in the Navy in 1985 and served as a Hospital Corpsman. While a Navy reservist, Dr. Dukes graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s in philosophy and religion from Newberry College. He also earned a Master of Divinity from Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary and served as a Chaplain in the Navy Reserves. Additionally, he earned an M.D. from Ross University.

In 2005, he was commissioned in the Army medical corps and subsequently provided psychiatric care to soldiers at Camp Taji in Iraq in 2008 as a part of a combat stress team. Recently, Dr. Dukes was activated to provide psychiatric support for individuals involved in the tragedy at Fort Hood.

Cedar Springs CEO Elaine Crnkovic is delighted to have Dr. Dukes serve as director of military psychiatry for the facility because of his well-rounded background and military experience.

“We are very proud to have Dr. Dukes join the Cedar Springs team,” said Crnkovic. “His experience and expertise in treating our country’s service men and women will assist us in continuing to provide outstanding patient care to those that have sacrificed so much for our country.”
