Poplar Springs Hospital Offers Military Substance Abuse Program

PETERSBURG, Va. — (June 2, 2010) — To address the growing need for service members with drug and alcohol problems, Poplar Springs Hospital has created a dedicated military substance abuse program at the full-service behavioral health facility. David Brady, D.O, serves as clinical director of the substance abuse program as part of a larger active duty military treatment program at Poplar Springs.

Treatment begins with a thorough assessment. Based on the assessment findings, service members are placed in different parts of the TRICARE-certified programs at the facility. Poplar Springs utilizes the American Society of Addiction Medicine criteria, factoring in the severity of addiction, community supports, co-morbid mental and physical conditions, and potential for complicated withdrawal to guide their treatment recommendations.

Dr. Brady understands military life and knows the challenges military personnel and their families face. With a well-rounded medical, and psychiatric background, Brady oversees the Active Duty Military Unit. Poplar Springs has treated hundreds of soldiers for the emotional and psychological effects of military stress and post-deployment adjustment-related issues—including substance abuse.

“Poplar Springs understands the impact that military service has on our service members and their families,” said Brady. “After touring several of the military installations within the Eastern Seaboard Region and speaking with military officials about their needs, we built a military substance abuse program at Poplar Springs designed specifically for these groups. We have streamlined treatment programs to address their issues and treatment priorities. We will actively continue discussions to determine the best course of action to prevent future patterns of substance abuse and help mitigate the current issues.”

The active duty military unit at Poplar Springs Hospital regularly treats military personnel from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Maryland with individual military personnel coming from as far away as Michigan and Pennsylvania.
